BLUE HILL, NE — Jon Capps, candidate for Nebraska Legislature District 38, announced today that he is temporarily suspending his campaign activities as he focuses on his family following a series of profound personal losses.
Over the past several months, Capps has experienced the passing of his sister this fall, his brother just before the holidays, and most recently, his beloved wife, Lori, who courageously battled late-stage dementia.
In a statement, Capps said:
“This past year has tested my family in ways I never could have imagined. Losing my sister, my brother, and now my wife has brought a weight of grief that requires my full attention and reflection.
When I entered this race, one of my deepest motivations was to spend meaningful time traveling throughout District 38 with my wife, visiting the towns, meeting the people, and cherishing those moments together while we still could. That time meant everything to us.
At this moment, I am not in a place where I can give this campaign the focus and energy it deserves. Out of respect for the people of District 38 and for my family, I am suspending campaign activities while we tend to these personal matters.”
Capps expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support he and his family have received from across the district and the state.
“I am thankful for the prayers, the kindness, and the encouragement shown to us,” he said. “Public service has always been about people and right now, my family needs me.”
The campaign will provide updates as appropriate.
While public campaign activities will be paused, previously prepared policy white papers and opinion pieces will continue to be published in the coming weeks. These writings reflect Capps’ enduring commitment to constitutional principles, responsible governance, and the convictions that led him to seek public service in the first place.
